Every month, more than one million cars cross Delaware River between New Castle (Delaware) and Pennsville (New Jersey). More than one billion cars have crossed this twin span since the opening of the span in 1951. There is no doubt that all of this traffic has caused a lot of wear over the years.
The top two inches of deck slabs from the New Jersey-bound span that are older than the structure will be removed to make it more efficient for future travel. Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) will replace them.
It is estimated that the project will cost approximately $71 million.
